영화 그린 베레(The Green Beret)

존 웨인이 감독과 주연을 맡은 1968년 작.

베트남 전쟁(1955~1975) 중에 만들어진 영화인데다가 극우주의자인 존 웨인의 성향 답게 미국은 절대 정의, 베트공(빨갱이)은 악으로 묘사된 전형적인 전쟁 홍보영화이다. 서부영화를 그대로 베트남 배경으로 옮겨놨다고 하는 평이 다수이다.

이 영화의 주제가인 Ballad of the Green Berets는 1966년 베트남에서 그린베레 의무 주특기로 복무중이던 배리 새들러 하사(SSgt. Barry Sadler)가 작곡한 곡으로, 당시 베트남 중부 고원지대를 정찰하던 중, 지뢰에 다리 부상을 당해 후송, 치료를 받던 중 만든 곡이라고 한다. 여기에 가사는 영화 그린베레의 원작 소설을 쓴 로빈 무어(Robin Moore)가 썼다.

영화는 그런대로 흥행에 성공했다고 할 수 있으나 실제로 더 유명하게 알려진 것은 바로 이 영화 그린 베레의 주제가 The Green Beret.

1966년에 5주간이나 인기순위 1위를 달렸고 싱글판이 9백만장이나 판매되었다고 하고 영국에서도 인기를 끌었다.
